Description

The best grilled cheese sandwich is made up of the holy trinity of ingredients: lots of butter, crisp golden slices of bread, and ooey-gooey melted cheese. We’ll show you some tips and tricks on how to get the perfect grilled cheese every time. Serve as is, or with some creamy tomato soup on the side.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 slices sourdough bread
  • 1 cup pepper jack cheese, freshly grated
  • 2 slices sharp cheddar cheese
  • Salt & pepper
  • 2 Tablespoons softened butter, for spreading on bread

Instructions

  1. Place the bread slices on a cutting board and add 1 slice of cheddar cheese on one of the bread slices. Layer the grated pepper jack on top of the cheddar and add a pinch of salt and pepper. Then add the other slice of cheddar cheese on top and place the other slice of bread on top of everything.
  2. Generously slather both sides of the bread (the outer sides) with the softened butter.
  3. Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat and place the assembled sandwich in the pan with one of the butter sides down. Add a piece of parchment paper on top, which you’ll use to flatten the bread with a spatula to ensure even cooking.
  4. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the bottom slice of bread is golden brown and crisp. Then flip the sandwich over and continue cooking until the other slice of bread is also golden brown and the cheese is melted, another 1 to 3 minutes. If the bread is getting too brown and the cheese isn’t fully melted yet, reduce the heat to low.
  5. Slice and serve!
