Description

This easy Thanksgiving Stuffing is our family’s favorite, made with toasted sandwich bread, sautéed onion and celery, warm herbs, sweet raisins, and crunchy walnuts. With just 15 minutes of hands-on prep and simple, budget-friendly ingredients, it bakes up golden and crisp on top and soft and savory inside, making the perfect side dish everyone will go back for!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1½ pounds white sandwich bread, cut into ½-inch cubes (about 12 cups)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus extra for baking dish
  • 1 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup celery ribs, finely chopped
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup walnut, coarsely chopped
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 3 large eggs

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 250°F. Spread bread cubes in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake, stirring cubes around several times during baking, for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the edges have dried but the center is slightly moist and yields to pressure. Transfer the bread cubes to a large bowl and increase the oven temperature to 350°F.
  2. While the bread dries, heat butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion, celery, salt, and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables begin to soften and brown slightly, 7 to 10 minutes. Stir in thyme and Italian seasoning, and cook for another minute.
  3. Transfer the vegetable mixture to a large bowl. Add the raisins, walnuts, and 1 cup of the chicken broth, and stir to combine. Add the dried bread cubes on top and gently toss until everything is evenly coated.
  4. Transfer the mixture to a baking dish greased with butter and spread it into an even layer. If making ahead, stop here, cover the dish with foil, and keep refrigerated until ready to bake.
  5. In a small bowl or measuring cup, whisk together the remaining 1 cup of broth and the eggs. Pour evenly over the stuffing and toss well to coat. Bake, uncovered, for 25 to 35 minutes, until the top is golden brown and crisp and the center is set. Let the stuffing rest for 5 minutes before serving.
