The Best Steak Sandwich

Nothing can compare to a delicious steak sandwich, which always hits the spot. And it doesn’t take a lot of complicated ingredients to make an amazing one! This rendition comes together with tender strips of flank steak, arugula, and blue cheese dressing piled on a crusty baguette. It’s perfect for weeknight dinners, lunch, or a lazy Sunday afternoon snack.

Steak sandwiches are a go-to in my household because of how simply it comes together and how delicious the payoff is! Although I’ve tried many variations of steak sandwiches, this is the default recipe I come back to every time.

From the juicy flank steak to the tang of the blue cheese dressing and peppery kick of the arugula leaves, this sandwich is a 10/10 in my book.

Steak sandwich ingredients

All you need are just 4 simple ingredients, plus some basic seasonings, to make the best steak sandwich.

  • Flank steak: The true star of the show! The perfect sandwich needs the best steak and although it sometimes gets a bad rep for being tough, flank steak when cooked properly can yield a tender, flavorful profile. In this recipe, we’ll be cooking it on the stove over high heat for 3 minutes before transferring to the oven to finish the process.
  • Salt and pepper: The necessary seasonings for our steak.
  • Baby arugula: Arugula has a distinct, peppery, and almost nutty flavor. Baby arugula is milder in flavor and doesn’t pack as bold a punch as full-sized arugula leaves, which complements the steak and the blue cheese dressing perfectly.
  • Blue cheese dressing: Creamy with a sharp, salty edge, this dressing has a distinctive flavor profile that elevates the sandwich.
  • Mini baguettes: This recipe assembles the sandwich on baguettes, but you can easily substitute with ciabatta rolls.

How to make the best steak sandwich

  1. Start by seasoning the flank steak generously with salt and pepper. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (where the steak will finish cooking). Then add olive oil to a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the steak for about 3 minutes on each side.
  2. Remove the skillet from the stove and transfer it to the oven, letting the steak cook in there for another 10-15 minutes or until it reaches an internal temperature of 145-155 degrees (if you prefer medium- to medium-well).

If you’d like to cook it shorter or longer, cook the steak until it reaches your desired internal temperature: 125 degrees for rare steak, 135 for medium-rare, and 160 for well-done.
  3. When steak is done cooking, it’s time to assemble the sandwich! Spread a layer of blue cheese dressing on the baguette, add the arugula leaves, and top with the cooked steak. Serve and enjoy!
