Classic Tuna Sandwich

There’s nothing more satisfying than a delicious tuna sandwich, and this recipe is by far my favorite. Whether you enjoy it as is or as a tuna melt, I guarantee that this will become your new-go to as well. You can easily prepare it ahead of time for a quick lunch or dinner. Serve on your favorite bread and enjoy!

What makes a great tuna sandwich?

Here are the key ingredients behind my tuna sandwich filling:

  • Tuna in olive oil: I recommend using tuna packed in olive oil for this recipe, as it lends a delicious flavor to the filling! But canned tuna or water-packed tuna that’s been drained well works just as well.
  • Mayo: The essential bind for the filling. Whole-egg mayo is preferred for its smoother and less vinegary flavor.
  • Celery: A non-negotiable addition to the filling. You gotta have that crunch!
  • White onion: Optional, but I love to add onion for additional crunch and flavor.
  • Dill: Fresh dill is preferred, but dried dill is also fine. The herbiness of the dill amps up the flavors of the filling.
  • Finishing touches: Salt, pepper, and some lemon juice
  • Bread of choice: Serve on sourdough, whole wheat, or rye bread in between some green lettuce (which makes a perfect base) and a slice of cheddar cheese!

How to make a classic tuna sandwich

  1. Open and drain the cans of tuna before placing into a medium-size bowl. Using a fork, break up the tuna as finely as you can until it appears relatively smooth.
  2. Add the diced celery and onion, and the fresh dill into the bowl of tuna.

3. Add lemon juice, mayo, salt, and pepper. Then mix everything to combine.

4. Take your slice of bread, add a leaf of green lettuce and a slice of cheddar cheese as a base, and then pile the tuna filling on top. Serve and enjoy!
