Golden Milk Turmeric Tea

If you’ve never tried turmeric tea (also known as “golden milk” tea), then you are in for a special treat! Not only is it outrageously delicious, it’s also an antioxidant powerhouse because of the star ingredient: turmeric. This recipe is easy to follow and will ensure that you have a ready batch at hand whenever you want to treat your body right.

What is golden milk?

Turmeric tea is a delicious Indian beverage of turmeric and milk that has long been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine — one of the oldest holistic medical systems in the world. It’s famous for its anti-inflammatory properties and its numerous health benefits.

The star ingredient is turmeric, which gives the drink its beautiful yellow color. But what makes turmeric so special is the presence of curcumin, one of its essential compounds. Curcumin has medicinal properties and is used to treat joint pain, arthritis, and inflammation.

The benefits of golden milk tea

When you drink turmeric tea, you’re giving your body the nutritional equivalent of a warm hug! Here are some significant benefits of the beverage:

  1. Helps to improve digestion and reduce nausea: Turmeric has traditionally been used in ayurveda to improve digestion. Some studies have shown that it can help with chronic digestive problems and improving gut health.
  2. Boosts immunity and fights inflammation: Regular consumption can strengthen your immune system and reduce inflammation.
  3. Supports heart health: Turmeric tea may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases by improving cholesterol levels and reducing stress.
  4. Potential cancer prevention: Some studies suggest that curcumin may help prevent and treat certain types of cancer.
  5. Improves brain function: Curcumin may support healthy brain function and protect against neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.
  6. Most importantly, it’s delicious!

Key Ingredients

This recipe uses gr0und turmeric powder, which tends to be more concentrated than in root form. Other spices and aromatics are used for flavor and to enhance the health benefits:

  • Black pepper: Essential to unlocking the full benefits of turmeric and absorbing its nutrients fully
  • Ginger: Adds a little full-bodied intensity to the drink
  • Nutmeg
  • Honey: Used as a sweetener in this recipe.
  • Whole milk when serving (optional): Milk is traditional with golden milk tea, but it’s just as good with water. I found, though, that a little fat helps with absorbing all of the nutrients in the tea and makes it more delicious!

How to make golden milk tea

  1. Combine turmeric, ginger, nutmeg, black pepper, and honey into a small bowl and whisk together until blended.

2. Add 1/2 cup of water into the mixture and whisk again to incorporate, until the surface is smooth and no clumps are visible.

3. Taking an empty ice cube tray, slowly pour the mixture into each slot until full, taking care to not spill any extra over the sides. Put in the freezer for 3+ hours or overnight.

4. When ready to consume, boil some water in a kettle or pot. Then place one turmeric ice cube in a tea mug and pour the water inside halfway (or all the way if omitting milk), so that the turmeric unfolds beautifully into the cup.

5. Top off with some steamed milk and enjoy!

Now you have a ready-made batch of golden milk tea ice cubes that you can easily pop into a mug whenever you like. Your body will enjoy this special, delicious, and health-boosting treat!
