Budget-Friendly Fenugreek Tea: A Simple Homemade Herbal Drink
This Egyptian Fenugreek Tea, known as helba, is a simple, budget-friendly drink made with just a few ingredients. It’s warm, slightly nutty, and naturally soothing, making it perfect for cozy evenings or when you’re looking for a gentle, nourishing beverage with traditional roots.

Egyptian fenugreek tea, also known as helba, is one of my favorite drinks to serve after a meal, especially when someone wants something warm, simple, and easy on the stomach. It’s gentle, comforting, and best of all, it’s incredibly affordable and made with simple ingredients, including fenugreek seeds, which you can find at most grocery stores or online.
In Sami’s household growing up in Egypt, helba was a staple, something that was always around, especially during colder months or when someone wasn’t feeling their best. It’s a traditional hot drink in Egyptian culture, known for both its comforting flavor and its everyday wellness benefits. Making it at home now feels like carrying on that tradition in the simplest, most approachable way.
What is fenugreek?
Fenugreek is a small golden seed commonly used in cooking and traditional remedies across the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. It has a slightly bitter, nutty flavor (almost like maple syrup when brewed) and is often used to make teas like helba, as well as in spice blends and savory dishes.

Why people love fenugreek tea
Fenugreek tea isn’t just a warm soothing drink, but is one of those simple, everyday remedies that people have turned to for generations. Here are a few reasons it’s so loved:
1. Simple and quick to prepare
No steep learning curve here to make this tea. Just simmer and enjoy! It’s the kind of recipe you can make anytime without planning ahead.
2. Supports digestion
Fenugreek tea is often used to soothe the stomach and may help with bloating or discomfort after meals. It’s especially nice to sip on after a heavier meal when you want something easy on the stomach.
3. Naturally warming and comforting
This tea is perfect for colder days or when you want something comforting without caffeine. The warmth of this tea makes it feel extra soothing, whether you’re winding down at night or starting your morning slowly.
4. Budget-friendly wellness drink
Made with just fenugreek seeds and water, this is one of the most affordable homemade teas you can make. It’s a great reminder that simple ingredients can still feel nourishing and intentional.
5. May help support appetite control
Fenugreek is often associated with helping you feel fuller for longer, which can be especially helpful if you’re trying to be more mindful of snacking. It’s a simple, natural way to incorporate something satisfying into your daily routine without much effort.

Ingredients needed
- 1 tablespoon dried fenugreek seeds: These whole seeds are the heart of the tea, providing flavor, nutrients, and that signature slightly nutty taste. Make sure to rinse them under cold water first before using!
- 2 cups water: Helps extract the flavor and benefits from the seeds as they simmer.
- Honey or preferred sweetener (optional): Can help balance out the natural bitterness of the tea and add a touch of warmth and sweetness.
How to make Egyptian fenugreek tea
Rinse fenugreek seeds
Rinse the dried fenugreek seeds thoroughly under cold water in a strainer. This helps remove any lingering dust and impurities from the seeds before using them.
Boil seeds with water
In a small pot over medium-high heat, add the washed seeds and 2 cups of water. Bring everything to a boil and once it does, let the seeds boil for 1 minute only! This is very important, as fenugreek seeds release color and flavor very quickly. Boiling them longer than 1 minute will darken the tea and make it taste noticeably bitter.
Strain and enjoy!
Strain the hot tea into a cup and discard the remaining fenugreek seeds. Add honey or sweetener to taste, if using. Serve warm and enjoy!
Want to add milk instead?
If you prefer a creamier version, you can substitute half of the water with milk at a 1:1 ratio (1 cup water + 1 cup milk). For best results, start by simmering the fenugreek seeds in water first, then add the milk toward the end to prevent curdling and get a smoother texture.

Where to buy fenugreek seeds
Whole fenugreek seeds are surprisingly easy to find once you know where to look! You can usually find them in the spice aisle of most major grocery stores, but they’re most commonly available at international markets, especially Middle Eastern, Indian, or South Asian grocery stores.
If you’re shopping online, retailers like Amazon often carry them at a low cost, and you can usually get a larger quantity for much cheaper than smaller spice jars. A single bag will last you quite a while, especially since this recipe only uses 1 tablespoon at a time.
Fenugreek seeds storage tips
To keep fenugreek seeds fresh, store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place like your pantry or spice cabinet. Keeping them away from heat and moisture helps preserve their flavor and aroma over time. Fenugreek seeds can last for several months (or even longer!) without losing their potency.
